Earlier this year Bitcoin policy think tank Coin Center claimed the role of interface to policymakers and regulators, with the publication of a framework for state digital currency regulation. On March 27, Coin Center issued a detailed commentary to New York’s BitLicense, combining measured praise with constructive criticism.

MIT Digital Currency Initiative lead Brian Forde praised the Coin Center commentary, and, in particular, the idea that regulations should strike a middle ground in such a way as to protect both consumers and digital innovators.

“Our mission is to build a better understanding of these technologies and to promote a regulatory climate that preserves the freedom to innovate using blockchain technologies,” says the Coin Center website. “We do this by producing and publishing policy research from respected academics and experts, educating policymakers and the media about blockchain technology, and by engaging in advocacy for sound public policy.”

Officials could see battle over Internet gambling this year

Terrorism and economic stimulus might be at the top of the congressional agenda, but two familiar topics to the gaming industry — Internet gambling and a proposed ban on college sports betting — are waiting to emerge in 2002.

Two bills aiming to ban Internet gambling in the United States — one introduced by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., the other by Rep. James Leach, R-Iowa — were introduced in Congress last year. Both bills are targeted at banning the use of credit cards, electronic transfers and checks at Internet casinos — and both could emerge in 2002, said Rep. John Gibbons, R-Nev.

“It’s going to be a battle,” Gibbons said at an afternoon session of the American Gaming Summit. “Both of them are very strong-willed individuals.”

Few observers give either bill much of a …

MACAU — The drive-by assassinations and gangland shootouts finally have died down in the former Portuguese enclave of Macau. Now comes the hard part: turning a city famed for gambling, girls and guns into a wholesome family and business travel destination.

But locals now jest that the real handover will come at the end of this year. That will be the end of the 39-year casino monopoly run by Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau, or STDM, a consortium of Hong Kong and Macau investors and 5%-owned by Hong Kong-listed Shun Tak Holdings Ltd. The monopoly dominates the Macau economy.

Approved in outline in late July, Macau’s legislators are expected to give the final go-ahead to the new legislative framework …

MGM Mirage plans to start an Internet casino next month, becoming the first United States casino to confront the challenges involved in offering blackjack, roulette and craps to gamblers on home computers.

The casino, whose computer operations will be based on the Isle of Man, a tiny island in the Irish Sea, will initially have a policy of refusing bets from residents of the United States, where it is illegal to offer gambling online.

The company will use new software and require proof of foreign residence in an effort to restrict betting to people over the age of 18 who are in a handful of European countries — no small task, given the challenge of knowing who and where someone is on the Internet.

MGM’s credibility and its license to operate are very much on the line. Regulators in some states — particularly in Nevada, where MGM …

Shut Up and Deal is a novel that explores the world of the compulsive, yet professional, high limit poker player. Shut Up and Deal has engendered a great deal of controversy in knowledgeable poker circles. Folks seem to love or hate the book, but few are indifferent to it. Only one character is developed. It’s a narrative, and one that doesn’t go anywhere, although that’s partly the point. The protagonist spends most of the book spinning his wheels, but in his …

At 9 o’clock in the evening on July 20, 2004, the threehanded play was intense at the final table of the World Poker Tour tournament held at the lovely and intimate Aviation Club in Paris, France. Parisians were bustling in the streets below, while indoors, Tony Guoga taunted Surinder Sunar, telling him: “Surinder, you are going to bleed so badly once it is heads up. You’re putting me to sleep. I’m scared for you!”

When it was down to two players, Tony G. brought the game to a halt for well over five minutes as he attempted to goad and provoke Surinder, who sat expressionless. Five minutes may not sound like a long period of time, but under the severe heat of the camera lights, along with a room bloated with anxious onlookers, five minutes was a dreadfully prolonged period of time. The official WPT statistician, Jan Fisher, confirmed …
